Home > Bedford, OH Information > The Bedford Garden Club’s 90th Anniversary

The Bedford Garden Club founded in 1927 is among the oldest active garden clubs in Ohio.  Dedicated to community service, the Club will celebrate its 90th anniversary with special events and projects throughout the year.

This year’s special events will include a Bedford Garden & Art Tour of the some of most lovely gardens in the city of Bedford, Ohio. Each garden will be paired with a local artist who will be displaying their work as well as working on a new piece while in the gardens. This will allow the public to see both the botanical beauty and artistic accomplishments in the city of Bedford. The date of the Bedford Garden & Art tour is set for June 17th, and tickets are on sale to be public for $10. The Bedford Garden Club members will be able to purchase tickets for $7.  For more information visit bedfordgardenclub.com.

While the Club traditionally sponsors a tree planting on Arbor Day, this year a second special planting in conjunction with the City will take place in the Fall with nine trees to help replace trees that have died on tree lawns or elsewhere throughout the City.  These plantings will go towards helping Bedford maintain its status as a Tree City, a designation bestowed upon the City by the Arbor Day Foundation for maintaining a healthy tree population.

Next, The Bedford Garden Club will be participating in Bedford’s 4th of July parade with a design that has been created by local artist and Bedford Garden Club member, Brenda Junkin. The planned entry is sure to be both whimsical and delightful.

Concurrently, The Bedford Garden Club is proceeding with design plans for an art installation at a site to be announced at a later date.  When complete, the project will add to the many places of interest in Bedford, OH.

Lastly, The Bedford Garden Club will be ending the gardening season and their 90th Anniversary year with a Dinner Gala. The Dinner Gala will be held on September 21st at the Birchwood Party Center. Special entertainment will include a narration of the club’s history over the past decades coupled with music of the period by pianist, Marshall Griffith. Guests will enjoy a full course dinner along with raffles and door prizes.  The public is invited and encouraged to attend to help The Bedford Garden Club celebrate a successful 90 years of beautifying Bedford, Ohio.

Throughout this celebratory year, the Club will maintain its regular schedule of educational programs, plant sales, field trips and other activities.

Friday, May 12 and Saturday, May 13, the Club will host their annual plant sale at the Ellenwood Recreation Center, 124 Ellenwood Avenue, Bedford.  “For over thirty years, the plant sale has been the biggest fundraiser of the year.  Perennials, annuals, herbs, flowers, vegetables, shrubs are sold out by the end of the sale.  So come early – come often”, says Chairperson Heather Rhoades.

Members support or maintain a variety of gardens throughout the City including planting flowers in the rotunda beds at City Hall, around the Civil War monument on Bedford Commons, the Bedford Historical Museum, Babyland at Bedford Cemetery and most recently the Union Street Bridge.

Bedford Beauties”, a front yard curb appeal contest sponsored by the Club will be accepting nominations beginning in May.  The contest is open to residents and businesses in Bedford. There will be 20 winners, to be decided by a panel of three judges.  Winners will get a Bedford Beauties “bragging rights” sign in their front yard for the month of July.
